A great read...

We found out last week that North Carolina State University has a Common Reading Assignment for the entering class of 2011. Since Steph has a history of waiting until the last minute to complete summer assignments (does AP English IV and AP US History ring a bell, anyone?), I immediately went to Amazon and ordered the book. This year the Common Reading Selection Committee chose....The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Here is what NCSU's website posted about the book:

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons, as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses and the effects of the atom bomb; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.
Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.
Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Va.—a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo—to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells.

Being the nosy, controlling, have-to-know-everything mother that I am, I decided to read the book first, and I have to say that it is AMAZING!! I cannot put it down! Even though it is non-fiction, it reads like a novel. I would highly recommend it to anyone, and I cannot wait to see what Stephanie thinks. The story is fascinating, and I am still having a hard time believing that this happened in our country. So even if you are not a soon-to-be college freshmen, I would highly recommend that you add this to your summer reading list.

End of year festivities... (Part I)

Sophie's last day of school was yesterday, a full 2 weeks before mine!! I am super jealous because my school days seem to be creeping by at a snail's pace. For the past few weeks, we have been very busy with her school activities. Here's a recap:

Farewell...

**Warning! Today's topic may be somewhat sentimental and mushy...therefore, if you are a male (particularly my husband who will ridicule me for days for this) you may want to tune back in at a later date....

Today marked the final Oprah Winfrey Show...I for one am very sad to see her leave. Not because I am one of her minions who worships the ground she glides upon [yes, those are Angelo's words verbatim], but because she has been a constant figure in my life for 25 years...Honestly, I didn't watch her in the very beginning--not many children or teenagers tune in willingly to watch her show. In fact, I'm not quite sure when I dd start watching her on a regular basis. I know that it was sometime after I was newly married and had Stephanie. Everyday at 4:00 I would turn to channel 11 to see what was on the agenda for the day. Often it didn't interest me and I would turn the channel. Other days, however, you couldn't tear me away. Her topics were fascinating ,and no one could interview a celebrity like Oprah. I subscribed to her magazine and read many of the books on her Book Club list. I stand by that list and still visit it often if I want to find something good to read. She offered inspirational advice that people across America needed to hear. I wonder if there is anyone that can take her place? With television filled with "celebrities" like those found on Jersey Shore, I highly doubt that there will be a suitable replacement anytime soon. I I guess that I, along with countless other Americans, will have to tune into the O Network to get our fix for the Queen of Daytime television. However, the four o'clock time slot will be awfully lonely without her....

Favorite Book Club Selections: I've read many of her books, but I chose to list only those that stood out the most. Also, I didn't list any of the classics because you would naturally assume that they would be on there (I am an English teacher after all!)

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Back Roads by Tawni O'Dell
Tara Road by Maeve Binchy
White Oleander by Janet Finch
The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve
The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts
I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

Keep calm....

I saw this, and I had to post it because it is my life in a nutshell right now. If anyone has ever worked with teenagers (or any school-aged kids for that matter), they know exactly what I am talking about! With only 12 more days of school left--and only 8 with students--I catch myself taking deep breaths and counting to 10 daily. Teenagers (especially 18 year olds who know everything) are a SPECIAL breed of people and if anyone doubts that for one minute, I will loan you 97 of my lovelies for an hour or two!! My mantra for the next few weeks?  "I love my job..really...I do..." (insert sarcasm if you wish)...

A Reality Check

It's one thing to know that you have a senior in high school, but it's a completely different thing to "suddenly" realize that she will be temporarily leaving in a few short months...Often referred to by some as the "Ice Queen" (Angelo..cough..cough), I never dreamt that this would bring me down. I thought that it would simply be a day of celebration, another milestone met--much like potty training and learning to ride a bike. Oddly, however, there have been a few red flags thrown in my path lately that should have been indicators that this wasn't going to be such an easy process after all:

1. While browsing Hobby Lobby one day in February, I came across the first piece of Class of 2011 paraphernalia--it was a simply picture frame with happy, smiling graduates. Out of nowhere, I felt my throat tighten and tears well-up behind my eyes. "Odd," I thought. "Where in the world did that come from?"

2. As my high school's lead senior advisor, graduation and all of its many splendors are second nature to me. I've organized countless senior games, breakfasts, photos, trips, and practices. They are normally events to be simply marked off a list until the BIG DAY (which by the way is always a great day because it kicks off summer break! Yippee!)...I made it through the majority of the events this year without a hitch...that is until this year's group photo. All of a sudden Stephanie walked out in her cap and gown and ...gulp...those crazy crocodile tears again.

3. Steph asked me to sit down with her last weekend and address her graduation invitations. I never for one minute thought that this was anything other than her way of getting me to do the dirty work for her (she is still a teenager with a HUGE lazy streak after all!), but as I was stuffing envelopes, the thought crossed my mind that the next time we would probably do something like this together would be at her wedding (many, many years down the road!)...sob....

4. and, the biggest wake-up call to date happened on Friday. On the same day I got two emails from NCSU...one telling her about her roommate and their rooming assignment and the other giving her instructions for enrolling in classes for the fall!! Yikes!

How much am I expected to handle?  My first one is leaving (albeit she'll only be 45 minutes down the road), and I realize that life as I have known it for the past 17 years will never be the same...I am proud of her and have total confidence that she will handle it well...the person I'm now worried about is me....

Show Us Your Life

I decided to link up with Kelly's Korner for Show Us Your Life Main Dish Recipes. My family would probably vehemently disagree, but the older I get, the more I like to cook. I look to several sources for inspiration, but there are two that stand out. The Pioneer Woman has a lot of recipes that are relevant to our lifestyle. The ingredients are easy to find in small towns, and she gives great step-by-step instructions. She is getting her own show on Food Network this fall, and I cannot wait to see her in action. She seems like a fun down-to-earth lady. I love her cookbook, too...it is full of great food and pictures.

I also visit Allrecipes often. It is the best site dedicated to food that I have found. In fact, the majority of the food I cook comes from this easy-to-use site. I have listed just a few of my favorite main course meals.

Bon Appetit!
